WORK

The End

2010

When are we going to take pictures for your mom?” asked Ezra, referring to an unsolicited email she’d received from the woman who birthed me.

“Oh yeah. Weird, huh?” I laughed.

“I was afraid when I started to read it,” she said. “I thought it was gonna be this ‘What did you get my son into?’ type of thing. But it was actually very sweet.”

“Yeah,” I said. “My mom’s kind of come full circle. I don’t think she’ll ever be excited that I’m doing porn, but she’ll call me up and ask, ‘Have you heard of this Jenna Jameson person?’ At least she takes an interest in my life. I think that’s cool.”

“So, how does she know about me?”

“I guess she’s a good listener. I was telling her about some people in the industry who I think are doing interesting work. You were one of them. I must have mentioned that you’re into photography.”

“Well, let me know when you want to do it,” she said.

“I have a few days off next week.”

I was kind of a bad son, because weeks went by and Ezra had to remind me, and we still didn’t set up a time to shoot pictures. Then I found myself at the DMV, waiting to renew my license and checking the various social media accounts on my phone.

Ezra’s Twitter read: So bored, I’m checking for campers on Craigslist.

Another update mentioned the Los Angeles heat wave.

Saw your Twitter. Want to take some pictures? I texted her.

Sure! she replied. But only if you get me and the dog outta the house! I’m careless and have no AC.

Text me your address, I typed into my phone.

She did. I practiced modeling. The guy at the DMV snapped my photo.

My fist slammed, rat-a-tat-tat, on the door to Ezra’s loft. She answered with her pet Chihuahua in tow. “Hey,” she said and wrapped her arms around me. “Sorry, I’m all sweaty.”

“It’s hot out,” I reminded her. “It’s hot everywhere.”

“We’re moving.” She meant herself and the dog, and her boyfriend Jesse, too.

“Really? You just got here.”

“I know,” she said. “But it’s hot, and miserable, and noisy. And Jesse hates it. Plus, it’s not safe for Sueño.” She meant the dog. “I have to carry around dog mace. At night, it’s not even safe for me.”

“Where are you moving?”

“Maybe the valley. Maybe somewhere near the ocean.”

“If you still plan on people shooting in your place, maybe the valley’s the better choice. It’s closer to all the porno.”

“We’re going to be living in an apartment,” she said. “So that’s not happening.”

“Did anyone end up shooting here?”

“Yeah, Todd from Negative Tolerance shot here the other day. My friend did a free photo thing. But, you know, we don’t have much furniture or stuff to fuck on. I’m not willing to invest just to turn this into a porno house.
